Reading

Reading books seems like a thing of the past.  With all the electronics we have now, we can read a book on our Kindle or Nook even read a book online.  I remember when I was in middle school I read all the time, I loved to read.  Of course I had a certain group of books that I liked the most.  This group of books was anything to do with an animal.

The school library had several animal books to choose from & I also had my own little library at home.  I was able to add even more books to my personal library, because I knew the school librarian really well & she needed to get rid of some of the Black Stallion books.  Of course the books she was getting rid of where falling apart & they had second copies of all of them.  I felt so special being able to take books home from the school library to keep.

When I went to high school of course the books I was reading changed, but I still loved reading.  I meet my future husband in high school our senior year, he didn’t like to read.  For me this seemed strange since I liked reading so very much.  But they do say opposites attract.

So fast ward to now we have a son in middle school & he’s a lot like his father in many ways.  One thing he got from me & we are both glad of this, is he loves reading.  Now we don’t have a Kindle or a Nook so he reads the kind of books I grew up reading.  Hardback or paperback books, I think being able to hold a book in your hands & carry it around with you & not have to worry about the battery running down is a good thing.

When I say that my son loves reading I mean he really loves it.  His teachers are even noticing this & it’s actually affecting his school work.  So maybe he loves reading a little too much, is that possible?  I guess it is because he’s not finishing his homework in class, instead he is reading when he should be doing his homework.  But he’s not bringing home the homework to do either so his grades have suffered a little from this love of reading.

I had yet another talk with him last night about reading is a good thing, but when you’re not finishing your work first before reading.  Reading is no longer a good thing.  That he has to get his work done first & then read afterwards.  We’ve had this conversation before, I hope this time it sticks.  They have a little over a month left in school so hopefully he can get those grades back up & start bringing home the books he wants to read.

Reading is agood thing as long as you don’t let it interfere with the important thing you have to do.  So make sure you keep a good balance:)
